<p>Una de las personas mas allegadas a mi vida tiene <a href="http://www.autismspeaks.org/" target="_blank">autismo</a>. Digo allegada porque a pesar de ser mi primo lo considero mi hermano. Kike nació cuando yo tenia 2 años. Cuando éramos niños la mayoría del tiempo me quedaba en su casa, su mama es mi tía favorita y la verdad era que prefería estar allá que en donde en realidad vivía, ya que mi tía Jenny tenia mejor “situación” que mi abuela (la mujer que me crió).</p>
<p>Raul Enrique es su nombre, desde chiquito lo hemos llamado Kike. Me imagino que porque llamarlo Raul Enrique era mucho mas largo y no sonaba bonito. Llamarlo solo Raul tampoco era una opción porque nombres como ese no se pueden acortar, no se porque, pero tampoco sonaba bien. Volviendo al tema de cuando éramos ninos y me quedaba en su casa, siempre me ponían a dormir en su cuarto. Mi hermana siempre lograba acomodarse en el cuarto de Andres, el hermano menor de Kike que era “normal”, ya que ahí ella dormía mejor. Kike solía saltar en su cama toda la noche mientras vocalizaba algo que se convirtió en su único lenguaje. No me dejaba dormir, muchas veces saltaba encima de mi. Muchas veces también  prendía y apagaba las luces del cuarto, por lo que mi tía decidió remover los bombillos.</p>
<p>A Kike no le gustaba ir al baño, cuando tenia ganas de hacer cualquiera de las dos cosas lo hacia en su cama. La peor desgracia para mi tía era tener que limpiar las paredes, piso, puertas, cortinas y todas las partes donde Kike esparcía su caca. La peor desgracia para mi era tener que ayudar a mi tía a buscar cualquier residuo de excremento que hubiera quedado.</p>
<p>Todos lo años nuestra familia se reunía en la casa de mi abuela. En una de esas fiestas mi tia Jenny se descuidó y perdió a Kike. Esa noche los adultos se dedicaron a buscarlo, Kike apareció al amanecer casi a las afueras de la ciudad. Al parecer había corrido toda la noche. Mi tía nunca a querido que a su hijo sea tratado como un loco, desgraciadamente la sociedad en que vivimos tiene la peculiar costumbre de llamar locura todo lo que interfiera con la norma. En ese tiempo tampoco habia tanto conocimiento sobre que significaba ser autista, y creo que los “normales” todavía no lo hemos llegado a comprender. Cuando mi tía trataba de explicarnos, nos decía que ser autista significaba encerrase en sí mismo, vivir en otro mundo. Al convertirme en una mujer adulta lo único que he logrado comprender es que yo soy tan autista como lo es Kike, o por lo menos siempre lo he intentado ser.</p>
<p>Kike ya es un adulto, tiene 22 años. Mi tía resolvió mudarlo en su propio apartamento y contratar terapeutas que lo supervisan día y noche. Todavia usa el mismo lenguaje de sonidos que adopto en su niñez, y no tengo la menor idea si tiene vida sexual. Casi todas sus terapeutas son mujeres y con esas cosas uno nunca sabe.</p>
<p>La bendición de tener una persona autista en mi familia ha creado en mi una gran tolerancia y amor a personas consideradas diferentes y especiales., hasta el punto de querer permanecer siendo parte se sus vidas.</p>

A collection of narratives of residents of the West Coconut Grove neighborhood during the 2008 historic presidential elections, bringing in underrepresented voices to the forefront of the project. About 40 people documented through audio, photos and video the emotions surrounding Election Day and stories of hope told by a small African American community, who voiced their perspectives and pride on a historic day in American politics. This project won First Place in the Student Interactive Multimedia Group Award in the 2009 <a href="http://beaweb.org/">Broadcast Education Association</a>’s Student Competitions, and First Place in the <a href="http://www.nppa.org/competitions/monthly_multimedia_contest/winnergalleries.php?year=2008&amp;month=12&amp;entry=102&amp;place=1" target="_blank">2008 NPPA Multimedia Contest</a>.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[In the 1800s, a total of three wars were fought by the U.S. military against the Seminoles.  These campaigns were the longest, costliest, and bloodiest of all the Indian wars.  Although many Seminoles were killed or removed to present-day Oklahoma, they were never defeated, and to this day, they are known as “The Unconquered” Seminole Tribe of Florida.
